Single-Metal-Thermocouple

Forums:

I tested a thermocouple made of pure iron. This one works with one metal instead of two different metals. It is made of a thick plate and two thin wires connected to the ends of the plate.

Heating one end oft the plate generates a thermoelectric voltage between the ends of the thin wires. The thermoelectric voltage is in the range 1...10µV / °K.

This construction generally could be used as infrared direction finder. The location of heat between the two contacts influences the thermoelectric voltage between the ends of the wires. Thermoelectric effects neutralize themselves by heating exactly in the middle between the two contacts.
