Mr. Wenjie Xie Wins 2011 ITS Goldsmid Award

Mr. Xie from the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing in Wuhan University of Technology, China has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 International Thermoelectric Society Goldsmid Award. The award, generously sponsored in part by Marlow Industries, will be given to Mr. Xie during the award ceremony at the ICT 2011 banquet in Traverse City, Michigan.

Mr. Xie received his BS and MS degrees in Materials Science from the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing in Wuhan University of Technology, China in 2005 and 2007, respectively.  Mr. Xie is concurrently conducting is PhD research in China and at the Complex Advanced Materials Laboratory at Clemson University, USA. Mr. Xie is expecting to finish his Ph.D. in 2011.

Mr. Xie's outstanding contributions have been documented in a number of journal publications mainly on p-type Bi2-xSbxTe3 alloys but on other modern thermoelectric materials as well. His curriculum vitae can be found below.

A total of three candidates competed for the award this year. In addition to Mr. Xie, the other candidates were:
 

  • Adrian Popescu, University of South Florida
  • Jayakanth Ravichandran, University of Calfornia, Berkeley

With again very strong applicants this year, the selection was difficult but the Selection Committee eventually declared Mr. Xie as the winner for this year.
