  • Pr. Juri Grin

Director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, Dresden, Germany

Interplay of crystal structure, chemical bonding and thermoelectric behavior

Yuri Grin obtained his PhD degree in chemistry at the University of Lviv (Ukraine). After holding different positions at the home university, since 1994 he is working for the Max-Planck Society in Germany. In 2001 he was elected as the Member of the Max-Planck Society and appointed as the director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Chemische Physik fester Stoffe in Dresden. He is a board member of different journals such as J. Solid State Chem., Sci. and Tech. of Adv. Mat. He is part of the boards of the ITS and ETS and organized the 2015 ICT/ECT in Dresden. His research is focused on the understanding of chemical nature of intermetallic compounds, in particular on the interplay between the atomic interactions (chemical bonding) and their bonding-based chemical and physical behaviours, in particular thermoelectric properties.

  • Pr. Takao Mori

Group leader at NIMS, Tsukuba, Japan.

Utilization of Magnetism and Other Novel Principles for Thermoelectric Enhancement and Recent Activities in Asia

Takao Mori received his PhD in 1996 at the University of Tokyo, Dept. of Physics. He is a MANA Principal Investigator and Group Leader at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan. He is also a Board Member of the International Thermoelectric Society (ITS). He is an Editorial Board Member of J. Solid State Chem., Adv. Appl. Ceram., Materials Today Physics, Mater. Renew. Sustain. Energy, J. Materiom., and President of the Asian Association of Thermoelectrics (AAT), and a Research Director of JST CREST. He has been recipient of a Minister of Science and Technology Agency Award in 2000 and nano tech 2016 Grand Award: Research Project Award (Green Nanotechnology Award). Takao Mori is also a Professor of the University of Tsukuba Graduate School, and serves as JST, A-Step Program Advisor, PRESTO Field Advisor, CREST Field Advisor. His current research interests include synthesis and properties development of inorganic thermoelectric materials, discovery of thermoelectric enhancement principles and also phonon engineering methods to control thermal energy in general, and development of methods to evaluate thermal properties on nanoscale.

  • Dr. Jean-Pierre Fleurial

Leader of JPL’s Thermal Energy Conversion Research & Advancement Group.

A 50 Year-Long Breakthrough in the Making: Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators with New Materials

Jean-Pierre Fleurial is a Senior Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory with nearly 30 years of experience in solid-state energy conversion R&D. He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine, France, as well as a Professional Engineering Degree from the School of Mines, France. He has achieved international recognition in his field as a leader in the research and development of novel materials and devices for thermoelectric energy conversion, in particular for high temperature power generation applications, including waste heat recovery systems and next generation radioisotope and fission space power systems. Dr. Fleurial currently manages JPL’s Thermal Energy Conversion Research & Advancement Group, and he serves as Chief Technologist for JPL’s Nuclear Space Power Office. After managing for the last four years the Thermoelectric Technology Development Project for the NASA Science Mission Directorate’s Radioisotope Power Systems Program, he is now Principal Technologist for the new NASA Next Generation Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator Project.
