B7: Device and system performance
Skutterudite materials are the very attractive for mid-high temperature power generation application due to their high ZT at such temperatures and relatively low raw material cost. Although there are numerous papers on Skutterudite materials, only a few reports can be found on module performance of these materials. In this paper, we present the long term reliability data of Skutterudite modules at elevated temperatures. The modules are fabricated by a technique which is unique to the material system. The thermoelectric elements are made by direct hot pressing of Skutterudite powder along with contact metallization layers providing superior peel strength with very low contact resistance. Failure analysis and diffusion studies of the module cross-section are investigated using TEM/SEM. The combination of unique module technology along with high module performance leads to potential advancement of many waste heat recovery efforts including automotive waste heat.
