C2: Automotive
The key research of thermoelectric generators (TEG)for automotive application is to improve its compatibility with the original vehicle exhaust system, which determines the quality of the exhaust gas treatment and the realization of energy conservation and emission reduction. A new TEG integrated with the three-way catalytic converter (CTEG) by reshaping the converter as the hot-side heat exchanger is proposed. In terms of interface temperature uniformity and internal flow characteristics, the heat exchangers with catalyst carrier arranged in different positions are studied by methods of computational fluid dynamics simulations. The results show that the structure with carrier deviating from base line by 64mm achieves a relatively ideal performance. Then the output power of the CTEG with ideally performing structure is calculated in a particular engine operating condition. Theoretically, this case study demonstrates great possibilities of CTEG for vehicles.
