B5: Energy system design and optimization
AMTEC(Alkali Metal Thermal to Electric Converter) are being considered for a high efficiency power generation system. AMTEC system have no moving part with the resulting potential for low maintenance and high durability, optimized AMTEC can provide a theoretical conversion efficiency between 20 and 30%, power density between 0.8 and 1.2 W/cm2 when operated at hot side temperature between 1000K and 1300K and a cold side temperature in the range 400K-700K.
In this study, 25W vapor anode multi-tube AMTEC system with several BASE(Beta” Alumina Solid Electrolyte) tubes are connected in series for increasing the volumetric power density of the cell was investigated experimentally. This AMTEC system have six BASE tubes and one piece wick which composed of three parts (; evaporator, condenser and artery wick) for returning the condensed liquid sodium to the evaporator.
From the experiment, temperature profiles, pressure distributions, power generation rate and efficiency of AMTEC system were measured and analyzed.
