C1: Waste heat recovery
This paper presents the novel applicationsfor the waste heat recovery of a high-power (HP) LED device using an integration of thermoelectric generator (TEG) module and DC/DC boost converter. In passive cooling mode, the TEG module is sandwiched between LED package and heat sink (or heat pipes). The waste heat is recovered by TEG and generates DC electricity for 3C devices charging or fans. In active cooling mode, a DC 5 V fan is mounted at the rear of heat sink and is autonomously self-powered by the waste heat recovery of LED lighting. With a HP LED module with the rated power of 100 W under ambient temperature of 25ºC, experimental prototypes demonstrate DC/DC boost converter autonomously works in 3 minutes and supplies the rated DC power of 3 W with the generated Seekback voltage of TEG module greater than DC 2 V. The active LED cooling using waste heat TEG has the advantages of autonomy and self-sufficiency. The energy-conversion efficiency is in the range of 3~5% depending on ambient temperature.
