This study reports on a variety of thermal absorber coatings for non-contact thermoelectric generator (TEG). The purpose of graded composition thermalabsorbing layer was to collect the industrial waste thermal radiations. In the case of steel casting process, the radiation intensity could reaches 3 to 6 kW/m2 which is depended on distance and source temperature. Therefore, the industrial radiation intensity is larger than solar thermal flux as well as few times at most cases. The selective absorber film was designed to use a reflective Cu substrate, a two-layer Tix/TiN1-x ceramic-metal (cermet) film and a TiN anti-reflection layer. The selective absorber film has high absorptance more than 70% in a near-infrared wavelength in the range of 1 μm to 2 μm, and has a property of high reflectivity in a mid-infrared wavelength more than 5 μm which can reduce the heat loss from the surface of TEG and causes a higher temperature difference for performing power generation. In the prototype experiments, the 2 kW/m2 heat intensity was applied to generate the electricity and 80 mW can be generated by 8-pairs of TE legs.
