Dear ITS Members,

It is my pleasure to announce that Mr. Xiaofeng Fan is the recipient of the 2001 Goldsmid Award for Excellence in Research in Thermoelectrics by a Graduate Student.

The award is sponsored by Marlow Industries, Inc. and carries a cash prize of one thousand dollars ($1000) and a Descriptive Certificate and will be presented at the Banquet of the 20th International Conference on Thermoelectrics in Beijing, P.R. China. In addition, the 2001 award will include up to US$1000 for travel and fees related to attending ICT2001 June 8-11th 2001 in Beijing, P. R. China.

The Award Committee thoroughly evaluated this year's four candidates, and felt that several of them were indeed worthy of the high standards used in the selection process. Mr. Xiaofeng Fan has conducted some very challenging research, both theoretical and experimental, in the area of thin film materials, structures and devices applied to thermoelectric/thermionic microcoolers. His outstanding work has been reported in both refereed journals and conference proceedings. Mr. Xiaofeng Fan is a graduate student in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of California Santa Barbara, USA, and is expected to present his latest results during ICT2001.

As current President of the International thermoelectric Society, and on behalf of the thermoelectrics R&D community, I would like to congratulate Mr. Xiaofeng Fan and thank the other three candidates for their efforts.

Best regards,

Dr. Jean-Pierre Fleurial
Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, USA
