2001 Goldsmid Award
The International Thermoelectric Society and Marlow
Industries, Inc. announces the Goldsmid Award for
Excellence in Research in Thermoelectrics by a Graduate Student.
2001 Goldsmid Award

- Dear ITS Members,

- It is my pleasure to announce that Mr. Xiaofeng Fan is the recipient of
the 2001 Goldsmid Award for Excellence in Research in Thermoelectrics by a
Graduate Student.

- The award is sponsored by Marlow Industries, Inc. and carries a cash prize
of one thousand dollars ($1000) and a Descriptive Certificate and will be
presented at the Banquet of the 20th International Conference on
Thermoelectrics in Beijing, P.R. China. In addition, the 2001 award will
include up to US$1000 for travel and fees related to attending ICT2001 June
8-11th 2001 in Beijing, P. R. China.

- The Award Committee thoroughly evaluated this year's four candidates, and
felt that several of them were indeed worthy of the high standards used in
the selection process. Mr. Xiaofeng Fan has conducted some very challenging
research, both theoretical and experimental, in the area of thin film
materials, structures and devices applied to thermoelectric/thermionic
microcoolers. His outstanding work has been reported in both refereed
journals and conference proceedings. Mr. Xiaofeng Fan is a graduate student
in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of California
Santa Barbara, USA, and is expected to present his latest results during
ICT2001.

behalf of the thermoelectrics R&D community, I would like to
congratulate Mr. Xiaofeng Fan and thank the other three candidates for their
efforts.
